CranioSacral Therapy for Mothers and Babies

A gentle and honoring way to calm and soothe mother and newborn baby

How CranioSacral Therapy Can Help

CranioSacral Therapy gently supports both mother and baby by addressing physical tension and stress patterns that may interfere with comfort, feeding, and bonding. This therapy may be especially beneficial for:

  • Ongoing breastfeeding and latch challenges

  • Nipple pain or repeated tissue damage

  • Difficulty transferring milk or concerns with infant weight gain

  • Excessive crying, tension, or unexplained fussiness in babies

  • Postpartum discomfort, including headaches and lingering body pain

  • Recovery from a long, difficult, or traumatic birth experience

  • Gentle preparation for birth and added support during labor

This subtle, hands-on approach encourages relaxation, balance, and a smoother transition into the early weeks of motherhood—helping families feel more connected, confident, and supported.

The craniosacral system is a circulatory system that we don't often think about, and many do not know of its existence. It consists of skeletal, nerve and connective tissues supporting the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid flows through four ventricles in the brain, the way blood flows through four ventricles in the heart, and down through the spinal cord.

For a mom, a prenatal session can help prepare her for her birth experience. It can also help facilitate labor and deep rest between contractions or after the birth, as the nervous system begins to function at a higher, more balanced level.

For the newborn, a CST session may alleviate tension and strains from a birth that is either precipitous or prolonged. It helps cranial bones to reposition, alleviating restrictions in the skeletal bones and soft tissues, with just 5 grams of light pressure. A baby's session is typically shorter than an adult 50-minute session, and the changes usually happen quite easily.

The therapy is performed with the receiver lying face up, comfortably clothed on a bodywork table; in the case of a baby, while cradled in mom's arms, sometimes sleeping, or if comfortable, lies awake on a soft surface, or held by therapist. It is extremely gentle and light touch; many times the attention and pleasure of release can be seen and heard in the baby's response.
